MANAGEMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT OF CARE
Managing the environment of care in a healthcare organization can be an overwhelming responsibility. Start with specialized buildings which must be designed to meet applicable Life Safety Code requirements, Guidelines for the Construction and Equipment of Hospitals and Medical Facilities, and local building codes; equip the buildings with specialized utility systems and medical equipment; fill them with thousands of healthcare workers, caring for hundreds of patients (don't forget the visitors); include a plan for the security of everyone and everything inside and out; add a variety of hazardous materials and large quantities of hazardous wastes; devise plans to prepare for disasters which may occur in the facility or out in the community; then implement and evaluate the above through a comprehensive safety management program; and then you are managing the environment of care!
Is your environment of care program effectively accomplishing the above objectives? Are you confident that your environment of care program meets the most recent Joint Commission, OSHA, NIOSH ADA, NFPA, and other applicable regulations and standards?
