MEDICAL STAFF SERVICES
Medical Staff members are an organizational aspect unique to hospitals. They have traditionally been both part of the hospital and apart from its functioning. Competitive pressures and changes in the external environment are eroding the traditional separations of Medical Staffs and hospitals.
New structures such as Physician-Hospital Organizations (PHO's) and Independent Practitioner associations (IPA's) are being formed to compete jointly for health care contracts, to establish direct contracting relationships with employers, and to distribute combined reimbursement systems. Additionally, hospitals and Medical Staff members are working as partners in developing clinical pathways, participating in interdepartmental improvement teams and addressing clinical care guidelines. Whether the issue is a traditional one or whether new structures and processes are being contemplated, an external perspective is often invaluable when working with change.
