The changes occurring in the healthcare industry have given rise to multiple new demands and challenges, including reorganization and redesign of patient care services. The issues facing today's Nurse Executive are extremely complex and diverse, including the pressure of an increasingly complex role expansion and the necessity to integrate services and decisions vertically and horizontally within the organization. Decreased lengths of stay, faster patient turnover and fewer resources have combined to create a constantly changing environment.

Highly developed management skills are necessary to balance the volume of demands with associated time constraints, design new service delivery approaches, provide quality patient outcomes, maintain productivity, and contribute to the organization's financial stability.
