RISK MANAGEMENT
 
  The risk management system encompasses those activities which attempt to conserve institutional financial resources in the face of potential loss. Risk management functions include a broad range of administrative and clinical activities intended to prevent and/or reduce losses associated with patient, employee, or visitor injuries; property loss or damages; and other sources of potential liability.
 
  Because risk management overlaps and interfaces with other clinical and administrative activities, the system should be structured to eliminate duplication in data collection, evaluation and reporting. Further, a comprehensive system should be effective and efficient in identifying and responding to organization-wide trends and patterns and be integrated with performance improvement and safety functions of the organization. An active risk management system is a positive factor to market and emphasize in contract negotiations with alternative delivery systems and healthcare purchasers and can result in lower insurance rates.
 
  Quality Systems Group will provide qualified consultants who can assist with:
  • Risk management plan and system development, including but not limited to, job description and evaluation tools, reports, system management guidelines and forms.
  • Risk manager training and role development and role enhancement of the Medical Staff, organizational leadership and employee participation in the risk management system.
  • Assessment of system effectiveness, appropriateness and efficiency.
  • Coordination with other systems, including fiscal, safety, employee health and performance improvement.
  • Review of occurrences monitors, incident reporting process and report structure, including sentinel event and root cause analysis processes;.
  • Guidance and education to facilitate risk management and Safety Committee functioning.
  • Appraisal and/or establishment of contracts management, claims management and product liability processes.
  • Evaluation and/or establishment of an effective system for performance improvement that reflects the needs and scope of the system.
  • Identification of loss prevention strategies in high-risk areas of the organization.
  • JCAHO pre-survey appraisal of the risk management system.
